Project #5 - Collage and Silhouette Reflection

Lesli Cuamani                                  PR #5/Visual Design                                        01/21/16
In this project, we took pictures representing ourselves. To accomplish this certain work, we used Adobe Photoshop CS6 as always. One of the first and major steps for the silhouette was to make a mask in order for the whole project to work out. Masks make a silhouette have an invisible gray scale canvas that emphasizes on the body or face of that person. We started first with the collage silhouette which I believe was a bit easier then the lettering silhouette. The images we had to pick in order to be placed inside our silhouette, were pictures we had taken previously that represented who we were as a person. The images I picked were a cat, sneakers, oranges, a bridge, a flower and an iced coffee and donuts from Dunkin Donuts. I love the things I placed and honestly, all of the pictures explain a different aspect about me. For example, I really love having varied pair of sneakers that give me a distant style or look compared to others. Cats are my favorite animal and honestly, I'd die to have one! Aside from those, each other general and vague looking image has an in-detail explanation behind. So after I was done placing all of the pictures, I had to quick select all of the background and surface blur it, so the original background of the original picture wouldn't be shown. This was one of the quick parts of the collage silhouette. Afterwards, I had to delete the excess amount of pictures standing out from my body figure. I used the quick selection once again on each picture separately and clicked on the extra detail hanging out. After I select it, I would simply press delete and it would miraculously disappear , which I thought was really cool! These were literally the steps that had to be taken with caution and as always, save the finished work as a JPEG to later upload onto Jupiter Grades. As soon as the first silhouette was done, we rapidly started working onto the second part.
The second part of this project was the lettering silhouette. This was the part that I feel I had most difficulty with but had somewhat easy steps to follow. So we used the second layer we duplicated from the original image to complete this part. We went into Layer and then used Load Selection to have the whole background selected for us instead of going through the hard work of perfectly selecting it. This simplified the process of using work paths that let use create the lettering. Due to work paths, the letters were able trace around the cutout. It was up to you on adjustments on how big letters were, the font, the width between each letter, and many more options. I wasn't completely satisfied with the results of the lettering silhouette since I somewhat rushed through it and looks very sloppy. I know I could've invested more time and effort into it unlike the collage silhouette. I honestly feel like I tried my best for the collage one which I feel looks very nice! I chose this person because it was instructed and had to be done so. I see myself using these skills I learned for later on when I help my parents promote their business by making business cards or simply editing object/image related pictures. I can also use these skills for later labs.
